Rysalka Studiya is a space to creatively explore the many artisanal, historical, and cultural facets of hand embroidery, expanding from the Slavic world outward.

Spanning from the Caspian Sea to the Carpathian Mountains, the Slavic world has a rich and dynamic history of craft embroidery practices, folk dress traditions, and creative rituals. Our space provides a small window into this world — including the handcrafts that have influenced it, and those it has influenced.

The tactile element of our studio comes through the design of hand embroidery patterns that primarily use the cross stitch embroidery technique, a stitch fundamental to traditional Slavic embroidery. Our original patterns are influenced by archival materials, as well as antique and historical textile samples of Slavic folk costumes. Through articulation of regional designs, these patterns teach us about the intersecting histories and journeys of Slavic folk culture.
